Last week I received an unexpected email…from myself. I originally drafted the email over 2 years ago. When I received it last year, I Boomeranged it to myself for another year. Both times I have received it, I have remembered that I wrote it at some point but forgotten what I wrote.
When I read the email, I both laughed and cried. I had written that we were planning a Disney trip for June, and I am in the middle of doing the exact same thing now. I also wrote that we were hoping to finish the basement that year. We actually just finished it 2 weeks ago.
While it was fun to read about what I was doing at the time, what I really appreciated was the optimism of my past self. I cautioned myself not to freak out over turning 40 because apparently deep down I was afraid that I might.
I also told myself that if life wasn’t as great as I hoped it would be right now, to remember that everything passes.
You know how when a friend gives you a piece of advice you listen? Imagine if the person you should trust most (YOU!) popped up to give you a little friendly advice.
Whether you write yourself a letter and hide it in a drawer or use one of the online email programs that will send it to you in the future (like Future Me), I would encourage you to give it a shot. You’ll be surprised at how smart your future self will think that your current self was.
