In my industry, I am exposed to a lot of technology before it really goes mainstream. Some of it ends up fizzling out before it gets to my friends. But every now and again something new comes along that is unique and fun and I have the pleasure of sharing it with those around me. Such is the case with the Poken.
What’s a Poken? In short, it’s a little USB drive that houses your contact information that you can use to quickly pass your information to others and then organize it. The long version would explain how all of that works, and I’m not the best person for that. Check out the video below to see the mechanics of it all.
Why do moms needs to Poken? It’s easy to see how the Poken can be helpful in a business setting, particularly at conferences. But I think they can be just as useful at PTO meetings and church socials. What happens when you are at the school and your kid introduces you to a friend and her mom and says you need to have a play date? You agree and promise it will happen “later.” Then you get busy and your kid pesters you to call the mom and work something out. You find the school directory buried under piles of papers and call the mom, only to get her voicemail. You play phone tag for days but really don’t know the mom any better than you did before and spend a lot of time trying to connect.
Think of the Poken alternative. You meet the mom and grab your Poken on your keychain. You touch them and exchange information. The next time you sync up, you have the mom’s picture, email address, Facebook, etc. You learn a little about her through her social media. You email her and she responds within a couple of hours. THAT is the world of networking that I want to live in!!
It’s going to take a little while before everyone starts to Poken, but you can get ahead of the curve. Depending on the age of your kids, you may want to pick one up for each of them as well. Check out PokenZoo.com for a good selection of both the “cute” Pokens and the business Pokens. They all do the same thing but you can choose which one looks more like you.
Here’s that video I was talking about:
