As if we needed more of a reason to love Amazon Prime, Amazon announced today that with your yearly membership you will now get unlimited, commercial-free, instant streaming of 5,000 movies and TV shows. The cost of the membership is not going up, and the benefit is being added at no cost.
You will be able to stream the movies and TV shows in many different ways including on your PC or Mac, your Blu-ray player, and your Roku device. Supposedly the selection is very similar to that of Netflix right now.
If you are already an Amazon Prime member, you can start streaming the videos immediately. If you are not, you can try out Amazon Prime for one month for free. You do need to provide a credit card when you subscribe and you will be autobilled if you do not cancel.
Personally, I am already a big fan of Amazon Prime and also have a Netflix account. If the movies overlap, it might be worth it for me to get rid of my Netflix account now. Will it mean that the cost of Amazon Prime will go up before too long? I am better that it does. But it would probably still cost me less than carrying my Netflix account. Between Amazon on Demand rentals, the Redbox at the grocery store, and Amazon Prime, I can’t imagine needing any more.
What are your thoughts? Does it make Amazon Prime worth signing up for? What’s Amazon planning with this new service?
