My friends like to tease me about my job because it seems like I “play” online all day. My kids say all I do is read email and look at Facebook. My husband knows the real truth because he balances the books. My work as an affiliate marketer is unconventional. Because of the types of sites that I have, I might go from reviewing wine clubs to sending out Disney gift cards to participating in a podcast all in the span of an hour. A lot of it is fun, and I can’t complain about my “job.”
On the other hand, being a small business owner is stressful. I have to make a certain amount of money each month as a part of my family’s budget (and it’s a full-time job salary that I need). I have an employee who has a family of her own. I have merchants pulling from one side and customers pulling from the other. I’m at the mercy of Google every time they change an algorithm. Changes in the economy change my earnings dramatically.
This is what I signed up for. It’s the chance I took when I left corporate America, turned my back on being an attorney, and started my own business. I wouldn’t have it any other way. Yet there are weeks like this when I see traffic changes and earnings changes that make me think back just for the tiniest moment about that steady income I used to have regardless of Google, the economy, or fickle merchants.
Guess I’d better stop messing around writing blog posts and get some actual work done that will pay the bills. If you, too, are a WAHM or small business owner who sometimes looks to the greener grass on the other side, know that you are not alone.
