I’ve looked around the best selection appears to be at Football Fanatics. They have the regular Terrible Towels as well as these varieties: Throwback Myron Cope (my favorite), Pink Breast Cancer Awareness, Black Terrible Towel, Toddler Terrible Towel, and Super Bowl XLIII Champions Gold. They range in price from $4.95 to $9.95.
We all know that Terrible Towels are pieces of cloth that Pittsburgh Steelers fans wave during the games, but do you know the history of them? Here is a little bit of it:
Just before the Steelers’ first playoff game in 1975, Myron Cope was approached with the idea of a “gimmick” to attract sponsors to his show. After some brainstorming, a towel was chosen because it was cheap and portable and everyone cold carry one. Although the idea was ridiculed by local media, over 30,000 Terrible Towels shows up at the game versus the Baltimore Colts. The team went on to win not only that game but every game through the Super Bowl, giving the town its second Super Bowl trophy.
Cope gave the rights to proceeds from the sale of the towels to the Allegheny Valley School in Coraopolis, Pennsylvania, which provides care for people with mental retardation and physical disabilities, including Cope’s autistic son.
