Everyone is talking about the Groupon Super Bowl Commercials about Tibet, the Rainforest, and Save the Whales and whether they were funny or distasteful. Watch the commercials here and then keep reading below:
So what do you think? A good way to draw attention to the company and the causes that it helps or a tacky exploitation of charitable causes?
Are you new to Groupon? Here’s a little more about it:
Groupon is essentially group buying done online for gift certificates or deals of some kind. Every day they release a new “Groupon” for many different cities and as long as a specific number of people buy the deal, everyone gets it for that price. Most of the deals are local but sometimes they also do national deals (like a recent Bath & Body Works Groupon).
A typical deal will be that you get a $20 certificate for $10 or a specific service (like an oil change or spa treatment) for about half price. There are usually some stipulations about when and how they can be used, so read the fine print. I’ve seen everything from Red Box deals to hot air balloon flights to restaurants to Coldwater Creek. You do have to pay in advance when you get the certificate, so it is not like just getting a coupon and then paying when you use it.
If you haven’t signed up for Groupon, you should at least get on their mailing list. By doing so, you will get one email a day with that day’s deal. It’s not a lot of email and you don’t ever have to worry about missing a deal.
