A couple of months ago I was approached by iMagnet to try our their Original iMagnet Cradle-less Universal Car Mount Holder. I’m one of those people who uses their Google Maps for direction more often than their in-car GPS because it’s just more convenient. So I was happy to give it a chance.
I got my girls involved to help me set it up. They were concerned that it would not work because I have a Samsung S5 and not an iPhone. The good news: You can use just about any smartphone! Even my S5, which is kind of big, can be used with it.
The first lesson that I have about it is that you should READ THE DIRECTIONS.
I know that sounds like a no-brainer, but apparently it wasn’t for us. It looked so easy to set up that we didn’t read through the directions first and then couldn’t figure out why it wasn’t working.
The first key to getting it to work for us was the rectangle metal plate with adhesive backing. The metal plate can go between your phone and your case or on the back of the case. I was able to slip it into the back of my case and didn’t even have to use the adhesive. If your case fits too tightly, you can put it on the back of your case.
The second key (and one that we really messed up with) was moving the mount around too much. It has a sticky suction cup that you mount on your dash. We kept moving it around so much, that the sticky suction got a little loose. I would suggest finding where you want it, mounting it, and then not playing with it anymore.
With it mounted on my dash, it definitely took away any temptation for me to touch the phone while I was driving, which we all know is not only dangerous but in some places even illegal.
The only down side is that my phone is pretty heavy between being so big and having a heavy case. So if I didn’t have the mount stuck really well, it did at times tip over and fall off if I went around a bend. That didn’t happen consistently, but it’s something to keep in mind if you have an S5 with a heavy case or a phone bigger than an S5.
The packaging comes with the Mount plus 1 circle and 2 rectangle metal plates. That means 2 or 3 people in your house can have the plates in their phones and use the mount whenever they are in the car. That is perfect if you have driving teens who rely on their phones for GPS. Given that my daughters think that even Mapquest is too “old school,” I have a feeling Google Maps will be the only thing that keeps them from getting lost when they start driving.
Having a good place for your phone in your car is ESSENTIAL these days to keep you from fiddling with it, reaching for it, and losing it while you are driving. iMagnet makes it easy to know where it is at all times, even if you aren’t using it.
